IELTS writing task 2 questions may require you to discuss your personal opinions on a specific topic. You may be required to offer examples and refer to evidence to support your argument.

This observation applies for the General and Academic versions of this exam.

Example of a General Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that teaching children at home is best for a child’s development while others think that it is important for children to go to school.

Discuss the advantages of both methods and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Example of an Academic Writing Task 2 question

A person’s worth nowadays seems to be judged according to social status and material possessions. Old-fashioned values, such as honour, kindness and trust, no longer seem important.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

You will score a higher band grade for vocabulary if you can alternate your vocabulary each time that you discuss a new idea that relates to the same theme.

Example: Theme - positive feelings towards vegetarianism.

Paragraph 1, opening sentence:     Introduction to the topic: advocating plant-based diets.

Paragraph 2, opening sentence:     I reject the argument that people must not eat meat.

Paragraph 3, opening sentence:     I am a supporter of the vegetarian lifestyle.

If you can find four themes to build your written answer, you should be able to meet the minimum word count limit imposed (250 words).

If you cannot find four themes to discuss, then you must offer longer answers for each argument that you put forward in writing.

Each vocabulary section below offers four alternative ways to discuss the same theme.
